Public Transport is a big focus for Transport Month

Since 2005, South Africa has recognised October as Transport Month. Under the theme, ‘Together we move South Africa forward,’ a series of road safety awareness campaigns are scheduled to run throughout the month.

One such campaign to kick-start Transport Month, offered by the City of Ekurhuleni, will give minibus taxis, buses and trucks free roadworthy testing which will be provided in testing stations throughout the month of October. It’s all about promoting safe, reliable and cost effective modes of transport to the benefit of all of us as road users.

Tshwane Green Ride

During the launch of Transport Month in Tshwane, Gauteng Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi encouraged citizens to opt for sustainable modes of public transport and raise public awareness about road safety during this period.

“The city has signed the Clean Bus Declaration and is committed to having 40% of its bus fleet converted to clean technologies by 2020. This will include buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and other combination of zero emission capable vehicles. We will recall that the first CNG bus was launched in Tshwane in November 2015,” said Vadi

He also stated that in terms of non-motorised transport, the city of Tshwane is actively promoting cycling through its sustainability outreach programme, known as Tshwane Green. The programme is aimed at encouraging more young people to take up cycling by distributing 2000 bicycles in the Tshwane area. This year will also mark the first annual Tshwane Green Ride which is a fun day for cyclists to get to know their city on 2 wheels.  The Tshwane Green Ride will become an annual event on the City’s calendar during Transport Month to promote low carbon interventions, healthy lifestyles and non-motorised transportation in communities. The event will take place on the 25th of October at the Central Sports Ground.

In addition to going green, Transport Month encourages motorists to consider other road users, obey the rules of the road and make South African roads safer.
